The Parador occupies a splendid Renaissance palace overlooking the beautiful plains of Alava and the Gorbea mountain range.
The small, pleasant village of Argomaniz is ideal for an evening walk. While the Ullibarri Gamboa reservoir is not far away. Napoleon rested in the Palace before attacking the town of Vitoria/Gasteiz during the Peninsular wars. The coat of arms of the Larrea family, who owned the palace at that time, is on one facade of the building. The interior features rooms reminiscent of an earlier period when nobility occupied the Palace. There are Renaissance ornaments and much wood is evident in the furniture, floors and ceilings. This 3 star Parador has a total of fifty three twin bedded ensuite bedrooms. All have satellite television, telephone, safe and mini bar. Facilities at this Parador include bar, air conditioned restaurant, heating, elevator, shop, garden, children's play area and car park. There is also a conference room with a capacity for up to 110 persons. The restaurants of the Parador group hotels offer a variety of dishes including a selection of local and regional specialities. They also offer a diabetic, vegetarian and gluten free option. The city of Vitoria/Gasteiz is approximately twelve kilometres from the Parador and places to visit include the Santa Maria Cathedral, the Escoriaza-Esquibel Palace and the Villa Suso Palace. The old quarter of the city is also worth a visit and also the Museums of Arms, Fine Arts, Natural History, and Playing Cards Museum. This is the area of fine wines with Rioja Alavesa being the centre of the Rioja wine producing area. August is the month for the festivals in this region. The Feast of the Virgin Blanca of Vitoria/Gasteiz is usually celebrated on 4 August. After the religious celebrations the partying continues long into the night. There are various outdoor activities to be enjoyed in the area including golf, horse riding, hang gliding, canoeing, saling, water skiing etc. The nearest airport is approximately 10 kilometers from the Parador. The Parador is approximately 76 kms from Bilbao and the famous Guggenheim museum, designed by the american architect Frank O. Gehry. The nearest railway station is approximately 12 kilometers from the Parador. The nearest port is approximately 90 kilometers from the Parador. Pets are not allowed in the Spanish Paradores. Napoleon's headquarters in the Peninsular war is the Parador of Argomanz. |
