Parador de Santo Domingo Bernardo de Fresneda is in the famous wine region of La Rioja in northern Spain. The Parador is 800 meters away from the historic center of Santo Domingo de la Calzada.
This town is on the "Camino de Santiago", one of the routes to Santiago de Compostela used since the 11th century, Calzada translates to a pathway or trail. The town was named after a priest who dedicated his life to help and assist the pilgrims travelling to and from Santiago de Compostela in Galicia. His burial place became a centre of devotion and pilgrimage and through the centuries there have been many reports of miracles happening near his tomb. In the town's cathedral there are some paintings illustrating the saint's miracles. Santo Domingo de La Calzada is located in a vast plain, near the river Oja, which gives the name to the region and near the mountain "Sierra de la Demanda".
The Parador is sited on the Convent of San Francisco, just a few hundred meters from the historic center of Santo Domingo de la Calzada.
On the restoration, the convent became an addition to the Parador group with its design and historic significance making it an ideal and interesting place to stay. The accommodation in this hotel of the Paradors group is in twenty four twin bedrooms, twenty three double bedrooms and one suite. The parador has restaurant, bar, heating, conference room, satellite television, car park and facilities for the disabled. The variety of the products and gastronomy of Rioja are a consequence of the diversity of the local landscape and climate.
This region has 6 natural areas integrated in the Red Natura 2000, some being included in the European network of special protection areas for birds.
Pets are not allowed in the luxury hotels in the Spanish Paradores group. Parador hotel in the converted Convent of San Francisco. |
